Thomas E. Guilbeau is a native of Lafayette, Louisiana, and a graduate of Tulane Law School (J.D. 1968). A criminal law specialist, Mr. Guilbeau has handled forty-four (44) homicide cases in his career, including eleven (11) death penalty cases which resulted in nine (9) life sentences, one (1) execution and one (1) sentence of death on appeal.
Mr. Guilbeau has represented many high profile cases including the death penalty case of Dalton Prejean (13 years), R. Kelly, and recently represented pro bono Mary Beth Dolan in the U.S.L. homicide case which resulted in a Grand Jury no true bill last August. He has tried and won the only "not guilty by reason of insanity" cases in the 15th Judicial District Court, (State v. Joseph Breland, [1979], and State v. Clarance J. Saloom, Jr. [1996]).
He was also the lead attorney in the "rat bite" case, Lejeune v. Rayne Branch Hospital, 556 So.2d 559 (La. 1990). This case overturned Black v. Carrollton R.R.Co., 10 La. Ann. 33 (1855), and ultimately resulted in the creation of Art. 2315.6 concerning liability damages caused by injury to another.
Mr. Guilbeau is a past president of the Lafayette City Council (1972-1976); past president of the Lafayette Criminal Bar Association (1984), and co-founder and past president of the Louisiana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (1987-1988).
